Niagara Falls in a nutshell

The Niagara Falls are three waterfalls on the border between Ontario and New York: the Horseshoe Falls, the American Falls and the smaller Bridal Veil Falls. Niagara Falls, Ontario, and Niagara Falls State Park in New York face each other across the Niagara River, and the Rainbow Bridge links the two sides.

On the Canadian side, Journey Behind the Falls starts at the Table Rock Centre at the Horseshoe Falls, and the City Cruises boat leaves from the Main Ticket Plaza further downriver. On the US side, the Maid of the Mist departs from the foot of the Observation Tower at Prospect Point, and Cave of the Winds is on Goat Island. This guide treats both sides equally. Prices are for 2026: US attractions in USD, Canadian ones in CAD, never converted.

Our picks: Niagara Falls tours

Our take: the helicopter combination shows the Canadian side from the air, the water and the tower in one go. The premium tour covers the classics with hotel pickup, and the US tour is the best way to do Maid of the Mist and Cave of the Winds together.

Hand-picked tours, booked through GetYourGuide. Prices are indicative starting prices in US dollars (as of October 2026). Tap a tour for live availability and the current price in your currency.

For most visitors, the easiest first trip is the side where you sleep or arrive. Crossing the border for one ride adds documents and time, so decide on the Canada or USA page whether it is worth it.

A few things to know before you go

Details that change what you can do on your dates.

Plan the border documents

Visitors from visa-free countries such as Germany need a valid passport for Canada by land. For the US by land, travellers on the Visa Waiver Program need an approved ESTA. The ESTA rule applies at land crossings as well as at airports, so sort it out before the trip.

The boat season runs into November

The Maid of the Mist sails from 24 April to 8 November 2026. City Cruises sells 2026 tickets for dates in its seasonal calendar, so check your day before you go.

Boat tours โ†’

Cave of the Winds runs all year

It has holiday closures and seasonal prices. The winter rate from 19 October 2026 to 31 March 2027 is USD 14 for adults and USD 10 for youth. Sandals are no longer handed out, so bring footwear that can get wet.

Cave of the Winds โ†’

Fireworks are seasonal

The falls are lit every night. The summer fireworks ran from 15 May to 12 October 2026. The Winter Festival of Lights runs from 14 November 2026 to 10 January 2027, with fireworks on selected nights.

The falls at night โ†’

New on the Canadian side

Niagara Takes Flight opened on 29 August 2025. It is a flying theatre, not a helicopter. Journey Behind the Falls costs CAD 33 for adults, or CAD 28 plus tax in advance sale, so check the total at checkout.

Journey Behind the Falls โ†’

New stairs at the Observation Tower

The former Crow's Nest stairs were completed in September 2026 and renamed Cataract Stairs and Overlook, with 274 steps in total. Parts of the tower may still be restricted, so check access on the day.
