Two sides, different strengths
The falls sit on the border between Niagara Falls, Ontario, and Niagara Falls State Park in New York. American Falls, Bridal Veil Falls and Horseshoe Falls are all visible from both shores, and each side has its own set of attractions.
On the Canadian side, Journey Behind the Falls takes you down to tunnels and an outdoor platform at the Horseshoe Falls, and the boat leaves from the Main Ticket Plaza. On the US side, the Observation Tower looks at all the falls, Cave of the Winds is on Goat Island, and the boat leaves from the foot of the tower at Prospect Point. If you are still choosing a boat, see the Niagara Falls boat tour page.

Canada and USA side by side
Prices are 2026 and shown in the currency of the side that charges them. Do not treat USD and CAD amounts as equal.
| Canadian side (Ontario) | US side (New York) | |
|---|---|---|
| Headline experience | Journey Behind the Falls at Table Rock Centre: lift down about 125 ft, tunnels, outdoor platform | Cave of the Winds on Goat Island, with the Hurricane Deck below Bridal Veil Falls |
| Boat | Voyage to the Falls from the Main Ticket Plaza, about 20 minutes, from CAD 47.95 for adults | Boat from the foot of the Observation Tower, about 20 minutes, USD 30.25 for adults and USD 19.75 for ages 6 to 12; under 6 free with a paying adult |
| Season for the boat | 2026 tickets on sale; dates follow the operator's calendar and the weather | 24 April to 8 November 2026 |
| Viewpoints | Table Rock at the Horseshoe Falls | Terrapin Point, Luna Island, Three Sisters Islands and the Observation Tower, which looks at all the falls |
| Cost to look | Attraction passes cover only the Canadian attractions that belong to the pass | Walking in the state park is free; attractions and vehicles cost extra |
| Around town | Fallsview Boulevard and Clifton Hill, with hotels, restaurants and attractions | Old Falls Street links the park with downtown hotels |
| Getting around | WEGO bus: CAD 16 for 24 hours (adults) | Free Discover Niagara Shuttle, hop-on hop-off; parking at Lots 1 and 2 USD 10 to 15 |
| Helicopter | Heliport at 3731 Victoria Avenue, 9-minute flight | Heliport at 56 Acheson Drive, USD 180 cash or USD 185 by card, 8 to 10 minutes |
There is no overall winner. For most first-time visitors with one or two days, the best plan is to see the falls from both sides, using the Rainbow Bridge on foot, and to pick one headline experience on each.
Seasons and costs that change the choice
Some differences are about timing rather than place. The US boat runs from 24 April to 8 November 2026, with hours of 09:00 to 17:00 until 31 October and 09:00 to 16:00 from 1 to 8 November. Cave of the Winds is open all year on a winter rate of USD 14 for adults and USD 10 for youth from 19 October 2026 to 31 March 2027, with closures on 26 November, 25 December and 1 January 2027. Journey Behind the Falls on the Canadian side is open daily all year.
Some costs add up differently. Parking at US Lots 1 and 2 is USD 10 a day in winter and USD 10 to 15 in summer. On the Canadian side, the WEGO bus costs CAD 16 for 24 hours or CAD 20 for 48 hours (adults, spring and summer 2026), and the boat has no car park of its own.
Which side for which trip
Short stop with a small budget
The US state park is free to walk, and Luna Island, Terrapin Point and Three Sisters Islands cost nothing. Add one paid ride, such as the boat or Cave of the Winds.
Cave of the Winds โEvenings, hotels and things to do after dark
Fallsview and Clifton Hill are the entertainment and hotel districts on the Canadian side. The falls are lit every night.
Falls at night โBehind and beside the falls
Journey Behind the Falls on the Canadian side and Cave of the Winds on the US side are different experiences. Journey is an elevator and tunnel visit, Cave of the Winds ends on a deck under Bridal Veil Falls.
Journey Behind the Falls โDay trip with a car or a train ticket
Where you arrive often decides the first side. Pick the side that matches your route, then cross for the second half of the day if your documents allow.
Getting there โCanada or USA side: frequently asked questions
Which side has the better view of the falls?
Both show the falls well. Table Rock on the Canadian side is at the Horseshoe Falls, and the Observation Tower on the US side looks at all the falls. Some tower areas have limited access, so check before you go.
Is the US side cheaper?
Walking in the state park is free, and individual attractions cost extra. On the Canadian side, attraction passes cover only the Canadian attractions that belong to the pass. Compare the products you actually plan to buy rather than one side overall.
Can I visit both sides in one day?
Yes, if your documents allow it. The Rainbow Bridge has a pedestrian crossing. Entry rules depend on your nationality, so read the Rainbow Bridge page before you plan the day.
Do I need a passport to switch sides?
Yes. Entry requirements for each country depend on your nationality and status. A tour ticket does not give you the right to enter either country.
Which side is better for a boat ride?
Both boats take about 20 minutes and include a poncho. The US boat costs USD 30.25 for adults in 2026 and the Canadian one starts at CAD 47.95. The two are priced in different currencies and run on different dates. Choose by where you will be that day.
Is this the official Niagara Falls website?
No. This is an independent travel guide, not run by or connected to the parks, the boat companies or any tourism office.
