Choosing a base in Niagara Falls
Niagara Falls has two city centers, one in Ontario and one in New York, and a border between them. The first question is not which hotel but which side suits your plans. The boat, Journey Behind the Falls and the helicopter flights covered on this site start in different places on each side.
If your plans are still open, look at the Niagara Falls tours first and pick the side where most of them start. The comparison of the two sides helps with that choice.

The four areas
No hotel is named here. Check the room and the offer for your dates.
Fallsview, Canada
This tourist district runs along Fallsview Boulevard and has hotels and restaurants. Fallsview Casino is a landmark here and is mentioned only as a place name. Not every room has a view of the falls, so check the room category before you book.
Clifton Hill, Canada
Clifton Hill is the entertainment district, with attractions, restaurants and hotels. It is lively, and nothing about the location alone guarantees quiet or a low price. Look at the room position if noise matters to you.
Downtown, USA
Old Falls Street links the state park, the convention area and downtown lodging, so the US park is close. You cannot reach the Canadian side from here without a border check.
Niagara-on-the-Lake
The Heritage District and the wine region make an alternative base. Plan the transfer to the falls, since a specific hotel's travel time is not known in advance. See the Niagara-on-the-Lake guide.

Which area for which trip
Pick the area that fits your plans, then check the details.
| Area | Side | Good for | Check first |
|---|---|---|---|
| Fallsview | Canada | A hotel district with restaurants on the Canadian side | Room view category, parking |
| Clifton Hill | Canada | Attractions, restaurants and hotels in one district | Noise, room position |
| Downtown | USA | Staying close to the state park on the US side | Border documents if you plan to cross |
| Niagara-on-the-Lake | Canada | Wine, theatre and a quieter stay | Transfer to the falls, season of the shuttle |
For most first-time visitors, the best choice is the side where the main sights of the trip are, because that saves daily border crossings. Choose the Canadian side for Journey Behind the Falls and the Canadian boats, and the US side for the Maid of the Mist and the Cave of the Winds.
Where the sights start
These starting points matter more than the hotel's postcode.
- Canada: Journey Behind the Falls is in the Table Rock Centre at the Horseshoe Falls. The City Cruises boat leaves from the Main Ticket Plaza farther downstream, with access via 5920 Niagara Parkway. The helicopter base is at 3731 Victoria Avenue.
- USA: The Maid of the Mist leaves from the foot of the Observation Tower at Prospect Point. The Cave of the Winds is on Goat Island, and the helicopter base is at 56 Acheson Drive.
A free shuttle runs on the US side in season, and WEGO buses serve Table Rock in Canada. Details are on the getting there page.

Checks before you book

Fees and extras
Ask whether a resort or tourism fee is added to the room price, and do not assume parking or breakfast is free. Check the total for your dates.
Crossing the border
On foot, a toll is charged only toward the US: USD 1 in cash or CAD 1.25 in cash, or CAD 1.25 by card or phone, collected on the Canadian side. By car the toll is USD 6 or CAD 8.50, charged only toward Canada. Entry documents depend on your nationality. See crossing the Rainbow Bridge.
Parking
US lots near the park cost USD 10 to USD 15 a day depending on the season and the weekday. In Canada, online passes include park-and-ride at Rapidsview Lot C, with no overnight parking. City Cruises has no lot of its own.
Season
Your dates affect the sights as much as the price. See the best time to visit for what is open in each month.

Where to stay: frequently asked questions
Does every Fallsview room have a view of the falls?
No. The district is named for its views, but the room category decides what you see. Check it before you book.
Is it better to stay on the Canadian or the US side?
It depends on your plans. Stay where most of your sights are, so you do not cross the border every day. The comparison of the two sides on this site goes through the differences.
Can I walk to the other side from a downtown hotel?
You can cross the Rainbow Bridge on foot, but a border check applies and entry documents depend on your nationality. Plan the crossing before the day you need it.
Is Niagara-on-the-Lake a good base for the falls?
It suits a quieter stay with wine and theatre. Plan the transfer to the falls, about 20 minutes by car as a rough figure, and check the seasonal bus connection.
Is niagara-falls.org an official site?
No. This is an independent travel guide. It has no link to Niagara Parks, the Niagara Falls State Park, a hotel, a tourism organization or any tour operator.
