Best time to visit Niagara Falls at a glance

The falls themselves flow all year, and the park on the US side is open every day of the year. What changes with the season is what you can do around them. The boats have a season, the fireworks have a season, and some trails and decks depend on ice and snow.

If a boat ride is the center of your trip, plan around the season for the Niagara Falls boat tours. The Maid of the Mist runs from 24 April to 8 November 2026. For everything else, the table of monthly temperatures further down helps you decide.

Season by season

What is open and what to expect.

Spring: April and May

The Maid of the Mist opens on 24 April. The White Water Walk and the Whirlpool Aero Car open for the season from April, and they close in November. The evening illumination starts at 8 p.m. in April and at 8:30 p.m. from 15 May. Summer fireworks start on 15 May.

Summer: June to August

This is the busiest period for the boats, from mid June to Labour Day. From 22 June to 9 August the Maid of the Mist runs from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. Fireworks go off nightly at 10 p.m. in the summer season, with longer shows on 1 and 4 July. They depend on the weather.

Autumn: September to early November

The Maid of the Mist runs daily from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. until 31 October, and from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. from 1 to 8 November. From 9 November it is closed. The evening illumination starts earlier each month, from 7 p.m. in early September to 6 p.m. at the end of October.

Winter: mid November to March

The Winter Festival of Lights runs from 14 November 2026 to 10 January 2027. The Cave of the Winds and the Journey Behind the Falls stay open, and the evening illumination starts early, at 4:30 p.m. in November and December. More on winter below.

Averages from two regional stations: St. Catharines in Ontario (1981 to 2010 tables) and Buffalo in New York (1991 to 2020). Neither measures at the falls.

Precipitation includes snow as water equivalent, not rain alone. Warm months are not dry months: June to September all bring 70 mm or more. The two stations use different periods, so compare the pattern rather than single digits.

Winter at the falls

Ice does not mean the falls are frozen. Water keeps flowing even in cold spells. Dress for wind and spray, and note that the Niagara Glen warns of ice, snow and early darkness.

On the US side, the Cave of the Winds runs a winter rate from 19 October 2026 to 31 March 2027: USD 14 for adults and USD 10 for youth. It is open from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. (the time of the last ticket sold) on most days and closed on 26 November, 25 December and 1 January 2027. The last ticket on 24 December is sold at 2:15 p.m. Access to the Hurricane Deck in winter is not promised.

The Winter Festival of Lights is free and runs daily from 5 p.m. to midnight over about 8 km of tourist districts. Fireworks at 8 p.m. last about 5 minutes. They are scheduled on Fridays and Saturdays from 14 November to 12 December, every day from 18 December to 2 January, and on 8 and 9 January 2027. New Year's Eve adds a show at midnight of about 9 minutes.

Crowds and queues

Treat this as a planning guide rather than an exact count of visitors.

Mid June to Labour Day and holiday weekends are the busiest times for the boat in Canada, and queues are possible between 11 a.m. and 6 p.m. A ticket bought ahead saves the cashier queue, not necessarily the lift or boarding. On the US boats, everyone boards in order of arrival, even with an online ticket. If your plans are flexible, go outside those windows. The Canadian helicopter flight runs 364 days a year, with no flights in the dark or under low cloud.

Which time suits which trip

Pick by what you want to do.

TripBest timeWhy
Boat ride and the main sightsLate April to early NovemberThe Maid of the Mist runs 24 April to 8 November 2026; the Canadian boats sell 2026 tickets and run weather permitting.
Fireworks15 May to 12 October, or 14 November to 10 JanuarySummer fireworks at 10 p.m.; winter fireworks at 8 p.m. on the scheduled dates.
Fewer boat queuesOutside mid June to Labour DayThat is the busiest period; also avoid 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. on peak days.
Trails, White Water Walk, Aero CarApril to NovemberThe attractions open for the season, and the trails depend on ice and snow.
Lights and a quiet visit14 November to 10 JanuaryThe Winter Festival of Lights is free; the Cave of the Winds has a winter rate.

For most first-time visitors, late spring or early autumn works best: the boats run, the weather in May and September is mild (highs of about 20 to 22 °C), and you avoid the peak boat season. Summer suits you if fireworks matter most, winter if you want lights and lower attraction rates.
